Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Kelsey-Seybold urologists can help uncover the cause for erectile dysfunction and create a treatment plan to achieve an erection.

Commonly known as impotence, erectile dysfunction is the inability to get and keep an erection. This can happen occasionally to any man for a variety of reasons, but if it is an ongoing issue, it can be stressful, result in relationship problems, and may even be a symptom of an underlying health condition.

Symptoms of ED

The symptoms of erectile dysfunction are most commonly:
  • Issues with getting an erection
  • Issues with keeping an erection
  • Reduced libido

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Because male sexual function is complex, there are many factors that can contribute to erectile dysfunction. These may be physical and involve the brain, hormones, muscles, and/or blood vessels. Alternatively, they may be psychological, such as stress and mental health issues. The cause may also be due to a combination of physical and psychological problems.

  • Heart disease
  • Atherosclerosis
  • High cholesterol

  • Obesity
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Parkinson's disease

  • Sleep disorders
  • Prostate cancer or enlarged prostate
  • Surgeries or injuries in the back or groin region

Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction may include:

Diagnosis and Treatment

To diagnose erectile dysfunction, your doctor will likely first determine whether you have an underlying condition that could be causing it.

Depending on the cause and severity of your erectile dysfunction, treatment may include:
  • Oral medication
  • Medication injections
  • Medication suppository
  • Testosterone replacement
  • Penile pump
  • Penile implants
  • Exercise
  • Psychological counseling

If you are experiencing the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, don’t let embarrassment keep you from getting treatment. The Urology specialists at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston will help determine the underlying cause and provide a treatment plan to alleviate your erectile dysfunction.
