Voiding Dy​​sfunction

Voiding dysfunction is a condition in which there is poor coordination between the bladder muscle and the urethra, resulting in either under- or over-activity of the pelvic floor muscles during urination. This can occur in children and adults.

Voiding Dysfunction Symptoms

Voiding dysfunction can present with a variety of possible symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty emptying bladder
  • Urinary hesitancy
  • Pain in the back, lower side, or abdomen
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Slow or weak urine stream
  • Urinary urgency and/or incontinence
  • Urinary frequency or infrequency
  • Dribbling of urine

Voiding Dysfunction Treatment

Treatment for voiding dysfunction is based on the underlying cause of the condition, the severity of symptoms, and test results. Options may include:

  • Pelvic floor therapy
  • Intermittent self-catheterization
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Placement of a neuromodulation device
