The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that’s only found in men and tends to become larger as a man ages. Problems with the prostate are common in men, most often in those over 50 years of age.

The prostate surrounds the urethra and sits just below the bladder and the opening of the vas deferens. The gland produces a fluid that mixes with sperm to create semen.

It can sometimes become swollen or enlarged because of certain medical conditions, including:

• Benign prostatic hyperplasia
• Elevated PSA
• Prostate cancer
• Prostatitis
