Pneumonia (Pneumococcal) Vaccines – What You Need to Know

Pneumococcal disease is common in young children, but older adults are at greatest risk of serious illness and death. In the United States, there are 2 kinds of vaccines that help prevent pneumococcal disease:

  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV13, PCV15 and PCV20)
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23)

The CDC recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all children younger than 5 years and all adults 65 years or older. In certain situations, other children and adults should also get pneumococcal vaccines. Talk to your doctor or your child’s doctor about their recommendation based on your specific situation.
