Breast Cancer Awareness: 3 Steps Before You Get Screened
No matter what time of year it is, there is always time to get ready for screening in a way that fits your life. Start by discussing your breast cancer risks with your Kelsey-Seybold physician and make a plan that is personal to you. Then, put that plan into action by scheduling your mammogram now and getting it on the calendar before you fall behind.
Step 1: Discuss Your Risk Factors and Personal Prevention Steps With Your Kelsey-Seybold Clinician
Begin with your Kelsey-Seybold primary care clinician or OB/GYN. This visit includes a review of family history, any prior chest radiation, and other factors that shape your risk and help you and your healthcare provider develop a prevention plan personalized to you. Together, you will set a schedule that follows current guidelines and your preferences.
What the guidelines say
For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a screening mammogram every other year from ages 40 to 74. The American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms from 45 to 54, gives women 40 to 44 the option to start each year, and notes that women 55 and older may switch to every other year or continue annually while in good health.
If you have a strong family history or a known gene change such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, ask whether adding a yearly breast MRI is right for you. The American Cancer Society notes that many women at higher risk benefit from MRI in addition to mammography, often starting around age 30.

If your last mammogram was done elsewhere, we can request prior images so the radiologist can compare studies.
Step 3: Prepare for the Day
A few simple steps will make your visit more comfortable and efficient.
- Time it well: If you have menstrual cycles, try to schedule when your breasts are least tender.
- Skip certain products: On the day of your mammogram, avoid deodorant, perfume, and powder because they can show up on the images.
- Wear a two-piece outfit: You will need to change from the waist up.
- Bring prior information: Share contact details for any previous breast imaging done, and bring a list of current medications.
- Speak up if you feel anxious: Tell someone so they can explain each step and adjust positioning for comfort. Invite a friend or family member to come along if that helps.
Overall, your appointment takes about 30 minutes or less in most cases, which includes check-in, changing, positioning, and the actual mammogram screening as well. In general, the mammogram screening only take about 5 – 10 minutes — with patients often remarking how easy and fast it is. Don't let fear, a busy schedule, or any number of other reasons make you put off this important, life-saving screening any longer!
