Robotic Surgery on the Rise for Gynecological Procedures

July 01, 2019

I’ve been hearing about robotic surgery. What is that?

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical option, which means patients usually experience significantly less pain and blood loss than those undergoing conventional open-incision procedures. "Patients also typically enjoy speedier recovery times," says Jagjit Khairah, D.O., a board-certified Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

Other potential benefits include:

  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss
  • Ability to perform more difficult procedures without an open incision
  • A shorter hospital stay or outpatient treatment
  • A faster return (typically half the time) to normal daily activities

Dr. Khairah says robotic-assisted surgery can be performed for a number of gynecologic conditions, making it possible for surgeons to use only a few small incisions. Robotic surgery can be used to treat:

  • Some ovarian cysts and masses
  • Prolapse (falling) of pelvic organs
  • Some cases of endometriosis Heavy uterine bleeding
  • Cervical and endometrial cancer
  • Some fibroids

Robotic-assisted procedures typically are done under general anesthesia. The 3-D imaging gives surgeons a better view of abdominopelvic anatomy.

“Robotic surgery isn’t for everyone, though,” cautions Dr. Khairah, who cares for patients at Kelsey-Seybold’s Fort Bend Medical and Diagnostic Center. “For example, women with severe medical problems may not be good candidates. Age and obesity also may be limiting factors. Talk to your doctor about surgical options and which one is the best for you.”
