Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Brings Breast Diagnostic Center to Spring
Fast-track Diagnostic Team Eases Anxiety of Abnormal Test Results
Houston (June 8, 2009) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is expanding its nationally recognized Breast Diagnostic Center to the Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center and bringing a full range of breast care technologies and coordinated fast-track diagnostic services to Spring and the surrounding communities.
A medical support team, including nurses, specialists and counselors, is dedicated to helping each patient upon the result of an abnormal mammogram. No woman under the care of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is alone and each is given the attention and support they need to help avoid those sleepless nights associated with abnormal results. The new center replicates the care model established in 1997 at the Main Campus Breast Diagnostic Center which fast-tracks more than 2,000 mammograms in women from all over Houston each year.
Results of every abnormal mammogram are viewed at the Breast Diagnostic Center by a team of specialists. Through the "PACS" electronic system, which stores and transmits X-ray images through computer technology, the digital images from a patient who received her mammogram in the Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center, and many other Kelsey locations, can be instantly transmitted to a designated Kelsey specialist, no matter their location in the Houston area. This process enables the medical team to immediately swing into action to help assure that the patient receives coordinated care quickly and efficiently.
"Any abnormal or inconclusive result on a breast exam causes anxiety and concern for patients," explained Priya Ramshesh, M.D., who practices Hematology and Oncology at the Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center. "That's why Kelsey-Seybold has developed a fast-track diagnostic model to help quickly resolve breast cancer issues. The process involves assessment by a collaborative team including an oncologist, radiologist and breast surgeon."
The Kelsey-Seybold Spring Breast Diagnostic Center is conveniently located at 15655 Cypress Woods Medical Drive, just off FM 1960. Services available at the new location include digital mammography, breast MRI and breast ultrasound, as well as a full-range of biopsy options. The Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center also offers genetic counseling and testing for women in high-risk groups, including women with family histories of breast cancer.
"While genetic tests can't definitively predict breast cancer, they can determine whether a woman has a hereditary propensity for the disease," Dr. Ramshesh said. "The decision to undergo genetic testing can be very personal and emotional, as can the process of considering options following a positive test. Our oncologists help patients every step of the way and Kelsey-Seybold streamlines that process with onsite testing."
Kelsey-Seybold's Breast Diagnostic Center is part of the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc. In addition, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Cancer Center near the Texas Medical Center was the nation's first freestanding cancer treatment program to receive the prestigious American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer accreditation.
The cornerstone of preventive breast cancer – the annual mammogram – is recommended for women age 40 and older and those who fall into high-risk categories. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call: 713-442-2165.
