Houston Business Journal Honors Dr Kelsey for Lifetime Achievement
Houston (May 28, 2009) – Mavis Kelsey, M.D., founder of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award during Houston Business Journal's first Health Care Heroes luncheon, part of the newspaper's four-day CelebrateEnterprise program of business events.
Tribute was paid Wednesday to the skills, dedication and professionalism of 12 stars of the Houston health care arena. Keynote speaker Tom Granatir, director of public health initiatives for Humana, told the gathering he believed changes coming to the health care industry, while feared by some, will likely bring many opportunities.
For 60 years, Dr. Kelsey has contributed to the development of Houston's medical and cultural landscape. His professional impact can be felt daily within the health care community by visiting any of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's 18 locations around Houston.
When he founded Kelsey-Seybold in 1949, Dr. Kelsey envisioned many specialists working together as a team to care for patients, all under one roof. This collaborative approach to medical care continues today and helps Kelsey-Seybold physicians deliver quality care to more than 400,000 patients each year.
At the age of 96, Dr. Mavis Kelsey continues to attribute much of the clinic's success to the doctors and staff, saying, "I think some of them made greater sacrifices than I did. There were a number of loyal people that stayed with us through our ups and downs. That is what made the clinic succeed in the long run."
