A Joint Walk: 5-Mile Walk benefiting the Arthritis Foundation

Houston (May 10, 2001) – Teams and individuals from the Houston area will join the fight against arthritis when they participate in the 5th Annual A Joint Walk, a five-mile fundraiser for arthritis research and community programs. As an added feature of the Walk this year, participants may take part in an arthritis screening to assess their risk for arthritis.

“May is Arthritis Month and the Arthritis Foundation will offer a new health assessment tool to help people determine if they are at risk for arthritis,” says Dr. Michael Condit, a rheumatology specialist with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and a member of the Board of the Arthritis Foundation “The Walk will be a great opportunity for our participants to learn more about how arthritis might affect them.”

A Joint Walk, with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic as site sponsor, is set for 8:30 a.m., Sunday, May 20. The Walk begins at Kelsey-Seybold’s main campus, located at 2727 W. Holcombe Blvd. and continues along Braes Bayou. The event offers a one-mile route that is accessible to people with physical challenges associated arthritis and joint replacements so everyone can enjoy the festivities.

“This year we expect to also have a large community turnout for A Joint Walk,” says Dr. Condit. “Many people have personal reasons for wanting to support this fundraiser, since one in six Houstonians has arthritis.”

A Joint Walk participants enjoy a festive atmosphere, exhibits, entertainment and refreshments, as well as the opportunity to earn prizes for their fund-raising efforts. Walkers must raise $25 in donations to enter and those who raise a minimum of $75 receive an official event T-shirt. For information on A Joint Walk, call 713-529-0800.
