The award recognizes Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, the Kelsey Research Foundation and the University of Houston College of Pharmacy for developing innovative, effective programs dedicated to the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The Clinic's Secondary Prevention Lipid Clinic was cited for excellence. The award was presented on Feb. 26 in Galveston during the Texas Public Health Association’s Annual Educational Conference. Kelsey-Seybold’s unique cholesterol program, known as the Secondary Prevention Lipid Clinic, identifies heart disease patients with high levels of “bad” cholesterol, involves patients and their families in the care and management process, and teaches them ways to change harmful lifestyle habits. The program offers solutions to lower patients’ cholesterol levels and reduce their heart risks. "Instead of simply treating the high cholesterol with prescription medication, patients work with a coordinated care team that includes a cardiologist, primary care physician, dietitian, pharmacist and nurses to develop an individualized plan based on overall health goals, history and risk factors, motivations and lifestyle,” said Ali Mortazavi, M.D., Chief of the Cardiology Department. “Our goal is to help patients lower their cholesterol and reduce the risk of recurring heart attacks by encouraging them to take an active role in the healing process."
