Allergy Services
At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, our Allergy specialists are skilled in a number of testing procedures. In addition, our doctors have access to a state-of-the-art laboratory and radiological services.
Allergy Skin Testing
Skin tests (also called scratch tests) are a rapid, simple, and safe way to identify the specific cause of your allergies.
During an allergy skin test, your allergy specialist exposes your skin to a variety of allergy-causing substances, or allergens, and then observes you for signs of an allergic reaction. This type of test is commonly used to identify allergies to such things as pollen, mold, pet dander, dust mites, and foods.
The test is done by pricking your skin with a small amount of each allergen. If your skin reddens or swells, the probability that you’re allergic to the substance is high. Since the test is performed at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, your doctor will be able to treat you on the spot if your allergic reaction is severe.
Allergy Patch Testing
Patch testing is a way of identifying whether something that comes into contact with your skin causes an allergic reaction (or dermatitis).
Your Kelsey-Seybold allergy specialist will first work with you to identify which allergens you should be tested for by learning more about you, such as substances you may be exposed to at work or what cosmetics and household products you use. They’ll then apply adhesive patches containing these substances on your skin (usually on your back).
You’ll wear the patches for 48 hours and then return to your allergy doctor who will examine the skin under the patches and identify which substances are causing dermatitis.
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure how well your lungs take in and release air. Your Kelsey-Seybold allergy specialist may use this test to diagnose certain types of lung disease such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema.
Your doctor will use a machine called a spirometer to perform the test. You’ll be asked to take a deep breath in and out of a tube several times. The machine will record the amount and rate of your air movement. Lower than normal rates indicate that you may have a lung condition that requires treatment.
Allergy Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots)
Your allergy specialist may determine that your allergies can be treated with immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots.
The shots themselves are concentrations of the substances you’re allergic to and are designed to improve your immune system’s tolerance to the allergens.
You’ll start by getting an allergy shot once a week at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. Your doctor will gradually increase the concentration of the allergen in the injection to build up your immunity until all you’ll require are occasional maintenance shots.
