A Good Weight-Loss Plan Starts with Realistic Goals
February 14, 2020
I want to lose 25 pounds. Where should I start?“First, start by setting reachable weight-loss goals,” says Amy Chen, M.D., a board-certified physician specializing in Family Medicine at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “A well-thought out plan can keep you focused and on your way to a healthy lifestyle with proper maintenance.”
Dr. Chen says you should write down your goals and list details such as when you will start your exercise program and what foods you should eat.
“By putting your goals to paper, you can track your weight-loss progress to see if you’re meeting your goals,” she adds.
Timing is also key. Timing is also key. Choose a start date for your weight-loss plan and be sure not to put it off. It could mean the difference between success and failure.
She says to help ensure success, set small goals that you can achieve gradually rather than one large goal. You will have a sense of accomplishment while attaining your weight-loss goal.
“Remember to ‘stay the course.’ Maintain your new weight so your weight-loss program is a total success,” says Dr. Chen.
Check with your doctor before starting any weight-loss or exercise program.
“Be willing to work with your doctor to assess your goals to help make your weight-loss healthy and permanent. By working as a team, you can keep your health concerns and personal fitness level in mind and readjust your goals if necessary,” concludes Dr. Chen.
