Understanding the stages of menopause
Menopause is a journey, not a single moment. Changes can begin years before your final period and continue afterward, with different symptoms and health considerations at each stage.
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when changing hormone levels can affect your periods and how you feel. Symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep problems, mood changes and brain fog may begin during this stage.
Menopause
Menopause is reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, typically around age 51. Symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep changes, brain fog, mood changes and vaginal dryness may continue, and treatment options are available to help.
Postmenopause
Postmenopause begins after you’ve reached menopause and continues for the rest of your life. Symptoms may continue or change, while ongoing care can also support your bone, heart, sexual, urinary and overall health.
