Advisory Regarding Swine Flu Outbreak

The physicians at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic encourage you to protect the health of you and your family:

Be aware and watch for H1N1 symptoms. Follow the "precautionary" measures described below. See your doctor and schedule an appointment by calling Kelsey-Seybold's 24/7 Contact Center at 713-442-0000.

Houston (May 8, 2009)–Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's medical leadership continues to follow the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We advise our patients to be aware of the symptoms and to see their physician if they develop these symptoms:
Fever
Cough
Sore throat
Body aches
Headache
Chills
Fatigue
Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with H1N1.

We advise our patients and parents of pediatric patients to be aware of the following emergency warning signs in children that may indicate the need for urgent medical attention:
Fast breathing or trouble breathing
Bluish skin color
Not drinking enough fluids
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Fever with a rash

Emergency warning signs in adults that need urgent medical attention include:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting

As with any infectious disease, Dr. Melanie Mouzoon, Director of Immunization Practices and Travel Medicine at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, is recommending standard precautionary measures:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

Since there is no vaccine available at this time, it is important for you to take steps to prevent the spread of the virus.

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic will continue to monitor the situation and post updates to our Web site as needed.
