Kelsey-Seybold and the American Diabetes Association Partner with Luby's Restaurants to "Beat Diabetes" this November

Houston (February 11, 2015) – Eating healthy while dining out is a common challenge that we all face. This November, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, the American Diabetes Association and Luby's, have joined forces in an exclusive partnership to BEAT Diabetes by dining out at one of more than 30 restaurants in the Greater Houston area.

Throughout the month of November, Luby's will highlight healthier options for patrons and encourages them to combine two steamed or roasted vegetable sides with one of their popular, healthier items like the blackened tilapia, grilled chicken breast, lemon pepper salmon, roast chicken, carved turkey and rosemary chicken. Patrons may also choose to build their own salad stacking fresh leafy greens, fresh vegetables and lean proteins like grilled chicken or salmon to make a healthier meal choice.

Additionally, patrons who dine at Luby's in November may choose to make a donation of $1, $3 or $5 to support the American Diabetes Association's Houston chapter.

"In this partnership with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and the American Diabetes Association, we're focusing our efforts on helping Houstonians to make healthier choices while dining out and raising money for a worthy cause at the same time," said Peter Tropoli, Chief Operating Officer, Luby's Fuddruckers Restaurants. "Luby's prides itself on offering delicious menu options that almost anyone can enjoy at all of our restaurants. We hope that our patrons will sample our healthier options in November and that if they have the capacity, make a donation to the American Diabetes Association."

"We're not asking patients to make a dramatic change in their habits – crash diets and exercise fads don't tend to work in the long run," said Patrick Carter, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.F.P., Medical Director of Care Coordination and Chief of Family Medicine, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. "The reality is that for many people eating out is becoming more common than cooking for themselves and we tend to indulge ourselves more at a restaurant than we would at home. We all need to remember to control our portions and to look for the healthier options on the menu when dining out and Luby's is helping diners do just that."

The BEAT Diabetes fundraising component will engage Luby's restaurant patrons as they pay for their meals, asking whether they would be willing to make a donation in support of the American Diabetes Association – Houston Chapter.

"Luby's is the first restaurant chain in Houston to implement this donation platform in support of the American Diabetes Association in Houston – and we commend them for recognizing the importance of diabetes screening, treatment and education," said Mary Baumann, Director of Mission Delivery, American Diabetes Association – Houston Chapter. "If everyone who visited a Luby's restaurant in a month made the small donation of even one dollar, it would provide funds for education, management, prevention and research for a cure."

The BEAT Diabetes campaign will also offer three educational webinars throughout the month of November. Topics that experts will discuss include The Best & Worst Foods for a Diabetic Diet, New Oral & Injectable Treatment Options for People with Diabetes and Eat This, Not That When Dining Out with Diabetes. Those interested in registering for the webinars may do so at www.kelsey-seybold.com/webinars.
