Kelsey Seybold Clinic Receives Three Year Accreditation With Commendation From The Commission on Cancer
Houston (July 30, 2013) – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the Cancer Centers at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is the first freestanding CoC-approved cancer program in the nation. The Clinic's comprehensive team approach to cancer care offers support, expertise, treatment and coordination of care based on patients' needs.
"A cancer diagnosis is among the most stressful and difficult experiences that a patient can face," said Tejash Patel, M.D., Hematology and Oncology Specialist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. "Kelsey-Seybold and the Kelsey Research Foundation work closely to offer integrated programs in cancer education, prevention, treatment and research. This accreditation of our cancer program validates that we have a caring and compassionate team of experts to help coordinate care and help improve the quality of lives of our patients."
When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, Kelsey-Seybold brings together medical specialists with diverse training to facilitate both diagnosis and treatment. Medical services and consultations among surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists are coordinated for the patient's convenience – and many times, appointments can be arranged on the same day and in the same building. This seamless process means fewer phone calls to arrange appointments and reduced travel time to see doctors and specialists for patients who may be too ill for the time and effort required to coordinate their own care.
Both of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Cancer Centers at the Main Campus and the Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center received a three-year accreditation with commendation. In the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor from the CoC, Kelsey-Seybold demonstrated compliance with all 36 standards for accreditation and received commendations for prevention and early detection of cancer, programs to improve the quality of cancer care, community outreach, cancer committee leadership, cancer registry management and research.
The Accreditation Program, a component of the CoC, sets quality-of-care standards for cancer programs nationally and reviews the programs to help ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing high levels of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC-accredited cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
