New facility to help expedite sleep disorder diagnosis for Kelsey-Seybold patients
HOUSTON (March 14, 2011) – According to the National Institutes of Health, 50 to 70 million Americans of all ages suffer from sleep-related problems. To meet patient needs for sleep disorder monitoring, testing and diagnosis, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic will open the organization's first Sleep Center in March 2011. The 5,700-square-foot facility will be located at 3900 Essex Lane, Suite 500 between Highland Village and River Oaks.
Kelsey-Seybold's Sleep Center will offer patients the latest in sleep monitoring technology in an environment designed for optimal comfort. Sleep Medicine specialists will be able to perform sleep studies onsite and, for those patients who meet certain requirements, patients can be monitored from the comfort of their own home. Additionally, Kelsey-Seybold Sleep Center can accommodate patients in need of a caregiver's assistance with a specially designed room for two.
"Sleep disorders are more common than most people realize and have been associated with a wide range of health consequences including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, stroke and other at-risk behaviors," said Maher Daas, M.D., a Sleep Medicine specialist and Chief of Pulmonary Medicine - Critical Care at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. "Like all of our clinics, the Kelsey-Seybold Sleep Center will be connected to our electronic medical record system allowing other treating physicians to have access to sleep center data. This will help facilitate physician collaboration, enhancing our ability to provide coordinated care to patients who may be experiencing a sleep disorder."
Kelsey-Seybold Sleep Center will have the capacity to diagnose Obstructive Sleep Apnea, assess daytime sleepiness and diagnose certain neurological disorders. All orders must be placed by a Kelsey-Seybold physician and orders are reviewed and approved by a board-certified Sleep Medicine Physician. Patients who believe they are experiencing a sleep disorder are encouraged to discuss symptoms with their physician.
