Spine Center

Braces manage pain by limiting movement and promote healing after injury or surgery.

An orthotic or orthosis spinal brace is used for a variety of reasons to help treat spinal conditions and decrease pain. Depending upon the condition and type of brace, it can limit motion to avoid painful positions or further damage, stabilize a weak or injured spine, or prevent a spinal deformity from progressing.

At Kelsey-Seybold Spine Center, your care team may recommend a spinal brace for conditions such as:

  • Spondylitis
  • Muscle strain or sprain
  • Scoliosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Whiplash
  • Degenerative disc disease

Types of Spinal Braces

There are several types of spinal braces used to protect the spine and correct a number of conditions. Whatever type of brace is recommended, it's crucial the brace is customized for the right fit. If it's not a proper fit, the brace is unlikely to be effective and may even cause further damage.

  • Corset braces are used to treat lower back pain, prevent further damage, and immobilize the back after spine surgery
  • Hyperextension braces treat spinal compression fractures and aid in recovery after spine surgery
  • Neck braces or collars stabilize the neck after injury or cervical spine surgery to relieve pain and prevent further damage
  • Rigid braces are used to treat lower back pain and are used to stabilize the lumbar spine after surgery
  • Lumbosacral belts put pressure on the abdominal muscles to reduce weight and stress on the lower back and stabilize the spine

The spine specialists at the Kelsey-Seybold Spine Center in Houston will ensure you are provided with the right brace for your condition and that the brace is fitted well. If you're experiencing frequent back pain and are seeking nonsurgical treatment options, contact us today for an appointment.
