Minimally Invasive Women's Surgery

Fibroid Removal (Myomectomy)

Using the da Vinci Surgical System, small tools and a laparoscope are inserted into small incisions in the lower abdomen and fibroids are removed.

Myomectomy is the removal of uterine fibroids. Fibroids are tumors that form on the outer part of the uterus, within the wall of the uterus or inside the uterus. They are typically not cancerous, but they can grow to be as large as a grapefruit, causing various issues such as:

  • Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding

  • Pelvic pain

  • Bloating

  • Problems becoming or staying pregnant

  • Frequent urination

  • Constipation

Surgery is most often recommended when these issues arise. Traditionally, a myomectomy would require open surgery and extensive recovery time. Now with robotic-assisted technology, removal of uterine fibroids can be performed via minimally invasive surgery, such as that offered at Kelsey-Seybold.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

During a traditional open surgery myomectomy, an incision is made in the abdomen, and fibroids are removed from the uterine wall. The uterine muscle is then stitched back together.

By performing a myomectomy through robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, small tools and a laparoscope are inserted into small incisions in the lower abdomen. The tools are attached to robotic arms that are controlled by a surgeon. There are several advantages to robotic-assisted myomectomy, including:

  • Removal of fibroids that may be harder to remove via traditional laparoscopic surgery

  • Lower risk of complications

  • Shorter hospital stay and recovery time

The da Vinci® system has been used in more than 3 million minimally invasive procedures throughout the world, and has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective form of surgery.

If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids that may require removal, the experts at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic can determine if robotic-assisted myomectomy is the right choice for you. Contact us today.
