Our extended family is spending Labor Day weekend at Padre Island. Any health tips for our holiday?

“Make your family’s holiday more enjoyable by following some basic health tips,” advises Courtney Sutherland, M.D., a board-certified Family Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

Dr. Sutherland offers these tips for a healthier holiday:

Stay hydrated.

Drink fluids every 15 to 20 minutes even if you don’t feel thirsty. Water is best, but some sports drinks with electrolytes can also help. Avoid caffeine, which can dehydrate you.

Wear sunscreen.

Use a broadspectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. Apply liberally 20 to 30 minutes before exposure. Reapply after swimming and every two hours even if you don’t go swimming. Add sunglasses, a billed cap or, even better, a wide-brimmed hat.

Keep track of children.

Popular Labor Day locations can become crowded. Designate a responsible adult to watch the kids. Should a circumstance make the kids feel unsafe, tell them to get to their assigned adult immediately.

Have a first-aid kit.
