​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​John I. Hughes, MD, MACP, AGAF has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2003 to 2013. Since 2006, he has also been named to the annual Texas Monthly "Super Doctors" list to the present time.

Dr. John Hughes is Associate Medical Director of Clinical Academic Affairs and Affiliations at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. 

Dr. Hughes is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine and is the recipient of their Distinguished Alumnus Award. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Los Angeles County Hospital System and a clinical gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Hughes served in the United States Army, including one tour of duty in Vietnam as a combat paratrooper. He was recently elected to the Mastership of the College of Physicians.

Academic and Clinical Po​​sitions

Dr. Hughes has served in several leadership capacities with the Clinic, including election to the Board of Directors, Chief of Gastroenterology, Associate Medical Director of Medical Specialties, and has served on several management-level committees with wide-ranging responsibilities. Nationally, he has served on several committees for the American College of Gastroenterology, and has made substantial contributions. 

Locally, he has been a significant contributor to the Baylor College of Medicine house-staff teaching program. He is a former recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Member Award from the Baylor Residents and the Best Teacher Award from the Baylor Gastroenterology Fellows. He has served on several clinical search and advisory committees for departmental chair positions, and was elected to the Executive Committee, at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Hughes presently serves as Associate Medical Director of Clinical Academic Affairs and Affiliations.

Ho​bbies and Interests

Dr. Hughes enjoys photography, travel, and contemporary jazz.​​​​​​
​I am a strong advocate of providing patients with comprehensive information about their diseases. This facilitates a great partnership between the patient and doctor to treat and manage medical conditions. I believe knowledge and teamwork are powerful agents in treating gastrointestinal diseases.

Awards & Recognitions

  • For the sixth year, Dr. Hughes has been recognized in Best Doctors in America® for his clinical expertise and excellence in caring for his patients from 2003-2013. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Research Project Award from a Fellow in the American College of Gastroenterology. In addition, Dr. Hughes has been featured by both local and national media as an expert on the prevention and screening of colorectal cancer.
  • Dr. Hughes is the former chairman of the Houston Chapter of the Texas Club of Internists.
  • The American College of Physicians (ACP) honored John I. Hughes, M.D., F.A.C.P., Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Gastroenterologist and Associate Medical Director of Clinical Academic Affairs and Affiliations, with advancement to Mastership, on Thursday, April 11, 2013.
  • The ACP follows a rigorous national standard when naming physicians to a Mastership level. Dr. Hughes was the only Houston physician to be honored as a 2013 “Master of ACP” and was one of only 47 physicians in the nation to have received this honor.


  • Dr. Hughes has authored and coauthored several peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at the American Gastroenterological Association's Digestive Disease Week, as well as at the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
