Page Content As Dr. Spencer Berthelsen prepares to retire as Managing Director on Friday, March 10, his legacy is nothing short of remarkable. His vision, perseverance and focused commitment over the past 37 years – both as Chairman of the Board from 2001-2016 and as Managing Director – has positioned Kelsey-Seybold to serve our patients and our communities today and in the future.Read what colleagues and staff are saying about his extraordinary career and leadership and submit your own tribute!Robin StanfordHello Dr. Berthelsen, my name is Robin and currently I work in the Contact Center. I would personally like to thank you for your kindness and generosity over the past 5 years of my employment. The Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts you provided really came in handy year after year. Thank you so very much for having such a kind heart. May all of your days be filled with joy and happiness and may your every endeavor be prosperous!Kimberly LawsonI worked with Dr. Berthelsen many years ago when I had to send service-related member complaints to him while working at NylCare 65, an original Medicare replacement plan. He taught me so much about healthcare and his passion for medicine, and has made a lasting impression not only on me, but every patient whose life he has touched. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Enjoy your retirement!!Michele CollinsHappy retirement, Dr. Berthelsen! No one is more deserving of it. It has been my pleasure to have known you and worked with you over the last 20 of your 37 years, I have always been surprised how you greet everyone by name and marvel at how you can remember all of us. I have enjoyed working with you over the years, but the biggest project we shared was the Epic implementation. With your overall support, guidance and Executive teams support, this project was rolled out successfully. I will miss you, but wish you much happiness and fun in retirement. Congratulations!! Woo Hoo!Carolyn DodsonDr. Berthelsen, you will be deeply missed by the KSC organization, but also by your peers and all of us that have benefitted from your expert leadership. I wish you the best.Drew BooneMan! It seems just like yesterday seeing you walking the hallowed halls of the old Quail Valley Clinic. As Dr. Byrd always said, "Time's fun, when you’re having flies!" Now you will have ample time to look back and reflect and relish all that you have accomplished. Thank you for all you've done for Kelsey-Seybold and enjoy your well-deserved downtime! Harriet HilliardDear Dr. B, your leadership has been nothing short of outstanding! On behalf of the patients who I have met (over these 15 years) and myself, I thank you for helping Kelsey-Seybold set a standard of medical excellence – comprehensive, compassionate, evidence-based medicine. I hope your retirement years will be as rewarding as your years here at Kelsey-Seybold clinic. Thanks again and Happy Retirement!!!! Anna Silva, M.D.Dr. B, thank you so much for your service and leadership. I have felt very supported personally and professionally during my time here at Kelsey Seybold. Happy retirement! Vilma SherryI have only worked here at Kelsey for the last 8 years. Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that this organization is very efficient. Having come from a huge one in the TMC, I am truly glad that I chose to work here. Our patients are very satisfied with the care they get here and I think that the main reason is that they are treated with dignity and respect. Employees learn from the people at the top of an organization. You sir have obviously been instrumental in making Kelsey a great place to work and to come to as a patient. Happy retirement!Mary GomezUnbelievable that I have had the privilege of working with you for approximately 33 years. It has been a pleasure and I wish you a joyous retirement. As the say, live, love, laugh! Debby WhitfieldIt was a good day for me when you offered me the position as your Executive Secretary in 1997. I knew that first week here that I wanted to stay. I have appreciated your calm and thoughtful approach to difficult situations especially when I thought the sky was going to fall on us. I have enjoyed every minute of our association. I hope that you have a wonderful retirement! You certainly deserve it! Many thanks for being a terrific boss! Susie BurgessDr. B., you have always been so gracious to us in HR in following whatever "weird" directions we have for you – from dressing up in a who-knows-what kind of outfit for picnic greeter photos or standing on a literal "X" for hours for Loyalty Luncheon photos. I remember in particular one time you were being fitted by an employee with western-style chaps for a photo. She asked for permission to reach around your leg to fasten the chaps and you remarked, "I'm not sure I know you that well." – cracking her up and successfully releasing the tension from an awkward moment. Thank you for being so approachable. Best wishes for a happy retirement.Noemi "Sam" SamaniegoI enjoyed reviewing cases with you Dr. B in Case Management. Each meeting was a learning experience. You’ve been blessed with wisdom which you so willingly shared with others. Kelsey-Seybold employees will continue reaping the rewards of your wisdom and leadership. Congratulations and thanks, Dr. B! Loretta GrayI've known Dr. B for 10+ years and worked with him on the same floor at Main Campus for a good part of that time. We only regularly spoke saying good morning or nodding to each other. I sat in a meeting to take minutes for a group and topic I had not been a part of before. I was so nervous trying to follow the conversation and take minutes. He looked at me and spoke directly to me asking me to put something in the minutes. I was so nervous I couldn't respond or speak. Just sat there and turned red and no voice would come out. Afterwards, I approached him and apologized for my behavior during the meeting. He was such a gentlemen, smiled and simply stated he hadn't noticed. Which I know wasn't true. I thought that was so kind and thoughtful to put me at easy. The little things make a big difference. Thanks, Dr. B. Congratulations and happy retirement!Barbara GordonBest wishes in the start of your NEW LIFE. No more traffic for YOU. I can't wait until my day comes. May GOD BLESS YOU always.Jerry RaifordDr. B., it has been a pleasure to share 20 of the 38 years that you have given to the Clinic. Your wisdom in guiding us through the murky waters of being acquired and then orchestrating our purchase back allowed the Clinic to grow and prosper into what we enjoy today. Your vision for the Clinic helped to guide the maturation of the IT department and provided IT the ability to deploy technology to improve capabilities and processes from making appointments to providing years of radiology studies and patient records to be available to our medical staff anywhere there is an Internet connection. Through the trying times, I know that both you and Linda have sacrificed much with the long hours and stress of guiding the Clinic to where it is today. We cannot thank you enough. Success is a team sport that must be led by someone with the passion and dedication for success plus the ability to keep one eye on the future and the other on where one is currently in order to keep grounded but moving forward. I would like to share two of my favorite quotes about gratitude and appreciation. The first is from Henri Amiel, a Swiss philosopher: “Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.” The second is from Voltaire: “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in other belong to us as well.”I have grown personally from your guidance. I will take what you have shared and in turn share that with others. I will continue to take care of the Clinic and do my part in keeping the Clinic great. I think keeping up the legacy that we are inheriting is the proper way to show true gratitude. My wish to you and Linda is for a very long and very happy next stage of your lives. Tammie AndersonWell wishes Dr. Berthelsen on your retirement! I remember when we first met at the Clearlake Clinic on Gemini working Saturday clinic. You have always been patient-driven and dedicated to patient care. I will miss your leadership and dedication. Best wishes!Edward GuerreroI recall my first interaction with Dr. B was as a recipient of the Mavis P. Kelsey award. Dr. B was incredibly kind to me. I was out of the office due to the death of my grandmother and Dr. B called me to give his condolences and to congratulate me on my award. His kindness encouraged me to attend the special event where I was given my award even though I was out on bereavement leave. That phone call left a lasting impression on me of his caring and kindness. Thank you Dr. B. for all you have done. Catherine Allen MorrisIt has been a pleasure working for you over the past 15 years!!! I've known Dr. B as we call him since I started at Kelsey 28+ years ago. But we've worked together closely for the past 15 years. A lot of history and a lot of stories, too many years to cover in a short paragraph. It's amazing to see where the Clinic was before you took your position and where it is today. You’ve lived and breathed Kelsey-Seybold for the past 15 Years as Chairman and Managing Director. I hope you can now enjoy yourself and enjoy retirement. You certainly deserve it! I'm sure we will stay in touch, so I won't say goodbye, but instead say talk with you soon.Charlotte RhodesDr. B, working under your leadership was indeed a pleasure. Prior to assuming my role as a Clinic Administrator, I had the privilege of observing many of Kelsey's outstanding leaders in action. As such, I have adopted several of your management styles. During the PMEC meetings, I routinely focused on and absorbed the manner in which you diplomatically directed some of our strongest personalities within this organization. You manage with an admirable degree of poise and I pray that I will become an effective leader like you. As you may know, you possess great respect; however, many employees are somewhat intimidated by your position. Permit me to share a funny story with you -- a few years ago, you were a greeter at the clinic picnic. As I approached the entrance, you greeted me and gave me a "high-five." That was, in my book, the coolest thing ever. I bragged for months about "my CEO" giving me a high-five. Dr. B, you are a gallant leader and I wish you all the best in your retirement.Angela DavisBest of wishes, Dr. Berthelsen, as you are about to embark upon your next adventure. I did not have the pleasure of meeting you in person, but your impeccable reputation as "Dr. B" transcended even before my career at Kelsey. Enjoy your wonderful journey, you deserve it!Belinda BradleyBest wishes on your retirement! Hope you enjoy it and make lasting memories, you deserve it!Tisha WebsterDr. B, thank you for your leadership and service. All the best to you in your retirement. Take time to smell the roses. :) Godspeed! Anthony BazanEnjoy your retirement and God bless you and your family. You will be missed. Thanks for all you've done for this organization.Lan HaDr. Berthelsen, it's been a pleasure to work under your leadership. Enjoy your retirement.Paula TurnquistI have only been at Kelsey for almost 4 years and I will miss Dr. B a lot. He is such a great leader and his wisdom and knowledge will be greatly missed. He was always willing to be dragged along to any employer meetings that might result in a KelseyCare account and I do admire that about him. He could switch gears from the board room person to the ordinary working joe and be just as awe inspiring. I will miss working with you and I wish you the best in retirement...I am not far behind you!Sandra MartinezAlbeit brief, it has been a pleasure working with you. Thank you for creating such a great place to work! Enjoy your retirement. Congratulations! Debra MaxieI'm sad that you're leaving but HAPPY that you stayed the course and ran the race!! I met you in 2014. I respected you upon our meeting and still do! You are the example of GREAT LEADERSHIP. I then met you again at the 2015 Top Collectors Luncheon – same level of respect and honor. Thank you for remaining PROFESSIONAL and POISED. I'll never forget you and will always remember your leadership. Enjoy your retirement, it’s much DESERVED!! Greg HyzakI have always been impressed with his thoughtful insight and discussions, calm and confident tone and demeanor, and overall understanding of the pulse of the entire organization and healthcare industry. He has been extremely successful leading Kelsey-Seybold through a lot of very significant changes and growth during his tenure. He will truly be missed, but has set a high standard that I know Kelsey-Seybold will continue to embrace into the future! I wish him the best of good health into retirement and beyond, and hope he is able to do all of the things that he enjoys! He's earned it! Samantha SperryI met Dr. Berthelsen when I had to undergo some testing for school. He is a great doctor and I wish him an abundance of blessings. Linda BrixeyYou took a chance on me and agreed to hire me after being out of nursing for a number of years. Your dry wit and steady hand at our helm will be missed. Have fun traveling, you and Linda deserve it. Karen SimienDr. Berthelsen, congratulations on your retirement. I wish you well and thank you for helping to make Kelsey Seybold a great place to work. I am blessed to have found such great care for myself and my family. Kelsey doctors are truly the very best. Diana WoodsHappy Retirement! Enjoy every minute! Nadya Alibhai, M.D.I believe his greatest impact has been upon his patients. I continue to see many of his patients that have been under his care for greater than 30 years and who tell me stories of their time with him. He has become part of their family. We will miss you. Kina DavisIt has been an honor and pleasure to work with and for you these past 22 years. My first opinion of you back in 1994 at Quail Valley Clinic was...he's nice! Fast forward to 2017, my opinion is still the same. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is a success because of you. Thank you for always putting the needs and best interest of the clinic first. Congratulations on your retirement! May God continue to bless and keep you and your family during this next exciting phase of your life. Take care!Sandra BeltranYou are going to be missed. I like to think that we are your second family so no goodbyes, just we will talk later. I will always have that picture of you wearing that Hula Skirt for one of our company picnics. That was the best! I'm going to miss you. Take care and don't forget us.Belinda PayneHi Dr. B, I remember meeting you for the first time at the original KSC Quail Valley Clinic. Oh my, how things have changed. The entire waiting room could barely seat 10 people! I watched you grow and advance in the organization as you took on greater administrative duties. Not only did you grow… but you grew the organization to what it is today. Your diplomacy, integrity and strong leadership kept this big ship afloat during difficult times. You remained steadfast. You kept the course. You finished the race! I will miss your leadership but your presence and your laugh have permeated the walls! May God bless you as you seek to enjoy a new life and purpose. P.S. Thank your family for sharing you with us all these years! Jacqueline LewisWishing you a Happy Safe Retirement!Carol WestDr. Berthelsen, I wanted to let you know what a pleasure it has been to work with you over the years. Enjoy your retirement.Sue Ann WrightThank you for your vision, dedication, time and hard work over the past many years here at KSC. We are all so truly blessed to have had your leadership here with us. God Bless and may you enjoy the next phase of your life in retirement!Marie Maurice, M.D.Congratulations on your retirement!! Thanks you for showing so many how important kindness, gentleness and honesty are in the practice of medicine. Your patients love you and will miss you dearly, as will the rest of us. Dad thought so much of you; and Mom, of course, so enjoys seeing you and Linda. Mom is especially happy you will have time to travel and have some fun! Thank you for showing so many of us the strength to make difficult decisions and the perseverance to see them through. Thank you for all your support over the years and for everything you have done for my parents. I will miss seeing you at the Spencer Berthelsen, MD, Main Campus (has a nice ring to it!), but do hope to see you at other clinic functions. Happy Retirement!! Mo GarzaDr. B, it's been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to not only work for you but to get to interact with you as well. Dating back to the days when I would see you at the Medical Towers with Kathyrn Ross and Margaret Head to time spent interacting with you in your current position. The fact that you wanted to hear my opinion and that you were willing to understand and consider what I was saying meant a lot to me. You always asked the right questions, but considered all answers and even when the answer was 'No', it was easy to know that your answer had been well thought through. Receiving that call from you notifying me of your selection for the Mavis Kelsey award was a highlight of my time here at Kelsey, but equally rewarding for me was being allowed to participate actively in meetings you led. Thanks once again for making me feel part of something big here at Kelsey-Seybold Clinics. We've come a long way, from flip phones, to Palm Pilots, to Blackberries, to smartphones. Changes happen and typically for the good of all. We will miss your leadership.Brenda MartinI would personally like to thank you for your kindness and generosity over the years of my employment. Although I have seen you at the company picnics, I have not had the pleasure of meeting you personally. My family and I have, however, benefited from your gracious generosity every picnic, every rodeo at Main campus, and your thoughtful yearly Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey bucks. As an employee and patient, we have all benefited from your Epic implementation, new and improved clinic locations, and your thoughtful, yet tenacious, professionalism as our leader. You have fought a great fight and finished this part of your course towards excellence and there is simply not enough space to say thank you sir for allowing us to come along for the lessons and love you have shared with us all. It's has been a pleasure working under your leadership and being a beneficiary of your contributions and leadership to the clinic and all of us. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is better because of you and your guidance. As a colleague stated earlier, as employees we do learn from the top and you have done Dr. Mavis Kelsey and the Kelsey-Seybold family proud by consistently setting the standard of excellence for Dr. Tony Lin to follow and build upon, for us the employee to learn and grow within and the medical community to aspire towards. May the peace of God go with you and all of your days be filled with joy and happiness and may your every endeavor be prosperous and overflowing with joyful memories equal to and greater than the ones you have brought to the Kelsey-Seybold Family and mine! Now comes the time to look back with pride and satisfaction and look forward with hope and anticipation of what's to come. Congratulations on your retirement and best wishes for the future. Carla Antley Dr. B., I don't believe I can count high enough to estimate the acquisition costs of all the Medical Imaging equipment KSC has purchased for multiple departments since my arrival 15 years ago, nor can I remember all the items. But I do recall your careful consideration of every one of those proposed purchases. In my early years at KSC, when we were operating with significant capital constraints, "Dialing for Dollars" was a common end of the year communication when you would call me to find out if we in Radiology really spent all that money. From $250 printers to multimillion-dollar linear accelerators and everything in between, Dr. B, it's been a blast! You've taught me so much, and I am a much better administrator for having had the opportunity to work with you. My very best wishes for your next chapter. Karlos Williams Dr. B, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve Kelsey-Seybold under your leadership. Having the opportunity to observe you as a fierce negotiator and a passionate leader for quality healthcare is how I will remember you the most. You will be greatly missed by those of us left behind. I wish you many new and exciting adventures as you embark on this phase of your life. I wish you all the best!Seneth LopezDear Dr. B, thank you for all the wonderful years of Kelsey's success under your leadership. May God bless you in abundance that you may truly enjoy your retirement for the best is yet to come!Calandra LakeWishing you the best in your retirement! It has been great working at KSC under your leadership, and I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy this exciting new chapter.Deborah BellI first met Dr. Berthelsen in 2005 at the Fort Bend location. I was told I would be rooming for him and I instantly had anxiety because he was our CEO and I did not want to make any mistakes or not live up to the standard of care that this great man gave to all of his patients. After meeting him and working with him, he put my mind at ease because he was very kind and professional. He complimented my work ethics according to the feedback from his patients. I will never forget his kindness. He is a class act and he will be truly missed by me, his patients and Kelsey-Seybold. Dr. Berthelsen, you are a great human being and a doctor of excellence. Enjoy your retirement and may God continue to bless you.Sabine HarrisonDr. B., I've been with KSC for a hair over 10 years now. You have been the leader, the example and the inspiration for me during this entire time. It will be difficult to imagine this place without you. I've come to appreciate you not just as a thought leader, but I must admit that your brand of management is unique, at least in my experience. It is rare to find someone as knowledgeable and business savvy who is still so very much in touch with the people he guides and those he serves. You will be missed. I wish you nothing but joy in your retirement. Martin LittmannI remember coming to the clinic in 2006 as the first Epic implementation went into production. I was so impressed to see you sitting down and working with the Epic Management Team assembling recognition plaques. I thought to myself, if this the kind of physician leadership running Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, this is where I want to be. And in the 10 years I have been here, I have continued to be impressed with the leadership, vision and support you have shown. I wish you all the best in your retirement.Steve LammersDr. B, thank you for always remembering my name and position duties in the company. I can't remember too many companies I've worked at over the years, small or large, where the CEO acknowledges and remembers the first name of nearly every employee. Amazing. Thank you, sir, for your pragmatic business decision skillsets in challenging and emotionally driven situations I've observed over the years. I have learned quite a bit from you. Congratulations on your retirement and I wish you the best.Angela Nguyen When I first met Dr. Berthelsen, it was in the second week of my employment with KSC. I thought to myself, "Second week and I got to see the Chairman!" Dr. Berthelsen was friendly, came across as a very "down to earth," warm, caring person which I didn't see in many chairmen I had met in my previous employments. Thanks, Dr. Berthelsen, for imprinting on me with a very different image of the chairman that all employees can associate with and get close to. My wish for you is to have a very rewarding retirement with good health and many blessings. Pooja PatelHappy retirement! We will miss you.Tammy CarterDr. B, thank you for your leadership! You've made my job in positioning you as an expert in Accountable Care so easy. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and big-picture perspective whenever an interview or speaking engagement came up. Thank you for being the "dream" spokesperson for our organization.Wendy ShapiroI wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your years of leadership. I enjoyed serving on the Board with you during some good times, and through some very tumultuous times. Your steady, calm, dedicated leadership as our Chairman for these past 15 years are why we are at such a successful place now, and well-positioned for much success in the future. I have enjoyed the many patients we have shared. They think the world of you!! I have also felt privileged to care for your delightful parents. I will truly miss you! Best wishes always to you and Linda and your family. Lynn Smith-CroninDr. Berthelsen, you are going to be sorely missed at KSC. I've been with KSC since just after the After-Hours Triage service started. In this time I have been able to move up through the department to be manager so I've seen several episodes of scary times at KSC. And as I've seen other organizations struggle to put a skilled after-hours triage service in place it is evident that your leadership has been instrumental in making sure that KSC continues to keep the program in place, gets the best benefit possible from this group and that you have understood clearly what we have to offer to our patients, our physicians and the insurance companies that cover our populations. Thank you for your broad understanding of healthcare as it relates to nurses and patients. Thank you for being a leader who is innovative and ready to take on new ideas and challenges. You've made us better and I hope we can continue to be as good as you expect.
