What People Are Saying

Employees and Physicians React to Being the First in the Nation

“The ACO accreditation is a very public acknowledgement of who we are. Together, we provide our children and adults patient-centered, value-based, coordinated medical care. It's what we've always done. It's a great way to practice medicine! And our patients love it. For the last several years, as many medical groups around the country have networked to discuss common issues and challenges, I've been somewhat mystified to discover that what seems ‘new and innovative’ to so many other groups are the things we've done for our patients all along. All these years, we've just done the things that we believed enhanced our patients' care, because it was the right thing to do…and now we are being recognized and rewarded – pretty cool!”

James C. Hoyle, Jr., M.D.
Medical Director

As I learned about the ACO concept, it became apparent to me that Kelsey-Seybold was already doing everything it took to be recognized as an ACO. The programs and infrastructure that we have put into place over the past 10-20 years were all necessary to be recognized as an ACO. The fact that these systems were already in place, and that we had been successfully managing capitated payments for so long, made Kelsey-Seybold a natural for the NCQA ACO accreditation. We have a very fine chief of Quality Improvement, Leon Jerrels, who had been instrumental in getting Kelsey-Seybold doctors NCQA certification in diabetes, cardiovascular care and spine care, in addition to our being recognized as a 'medical home.' I was very confident that Leon would have the knowledge and skills to present our best case to the NCQA. It is a credit to everyone at Kelsey-Seybold that we were able to achieve recognition as the first NCQA-accredited Accountable Care Organization. Our patients have enjoyed the benefits of our accountable care model for many years. The process of gaining ACO accreditation has enabled us to improve our systems and become a model for other organizations hoping to become ACOs.”

Patrick Carter, M.D.
Chief of Family Medicine and Medical Director of Managed Care and Quality Improvement

“It is a testament of exactly how great the care at Kelsey-Seybold is. It is one thing for a medical group to just say they are an Accountable Care Organization, but to have a leading organization such as NCQA publicly proclaim that your care and standards meet their strict guidelines says a lot to our patients and the medical community. The accreditation says to our patients that we exist to provide them with quality care, enhance the health of our community and to be good stewards of their healthcare dollars.”

Leon Jerrels
Director of Quality Improvement

“Over the past few years we have continually heard about a new way to practice through an ACO. I have had the opportunity to participate in discussions with ambulatory care nurses from all over the country. I was always amazed that many found the ideas which are the foundation of ACO and Medical Home to be so different from their normal practice settings. Kelsey has always followed the basic precepts that are the foundation of an ACO. When Kelsey was recognized as the very first ACO accredited by NCQA, it validated my opinion that this is what we do. We didn't experience major shifts in our care management operations. With a few adjustments, we were already there. Kudos to our visionary leaders who identified what care excellence should look like and proceeded to put it into action. I am proud to be a part of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.”

Linda Brixey, R.N.
Program Manager, Clinical Education, Immunizations & Travel Medicine

“Being named the first accredited ACO is extremely exciting for Kelsey-Seybold and everyone who has played a role in achieving this prestigious recognition. In the rapidly changing face of healthcare, this reaffirms the commitment of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic to afford the highest quality healthcare, while keeping costs down. As the benchmark of healthcare, our patients will continue to receive care that not only meets, but exceeds the criteria for being named an NCQA ACO.”

Benjamin Dillion, M.D.

“With our ACO designation, our patients can expect a seamless approach to their patient care and timely collaboration with their primary care physician and specialists. Our patients will have more control over their healthcare needs – without jumping through hoops. National awards are exciting, but our focus at Kelsey-Seybold has been, and will always be quality care!”

Dolly Simpson
Cypress Clinic Administrator

"This is a great achievement to be nationally recognized for delivering a model of patient- centered, high-quality medical care. Our patients benefit from receiving coordinated healthcare and are already experiencing healthcare of the future. I’m proud to work for such a great healthcare organization.”

Frances Smith, M.D.
Chief of Obstetrics/Gynecology
