Chiropractic Care FAQs

  • What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who treat many conditions as they relate to the spine, emphasizing the fact that a person’s health depends on correct functioning of the spine.

Chiropractors adjust or manipulate misaligned vertebrae to help restore correct functioning of your spine, as well as other parts of your body that may be affected by such misalignment, through the use of their hands or various instruments.

  • Is Chiropractic Care effective?

Over the past 20 years, many controlled and independent research studies have shown that Chiropractic Care is safe and effective for helping to treat low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other conditions relating to the spine.

Based on these scientific studies, the consensus is that Chiropractic Care is often an effective choice for many spinal problems. The extent to which a person can benefit from Chiropractic Care varies depending on their problem and how long it’s existed.

  • What does DC mean in a chiropractor's title?

DC stands for "Doctor of Chiropractic," the degree state-licensed chiropractors must earn in order to practice.

  • What can I expect during a chiropractic examination?

A Kelsey-Seybold chiropractor will conduct a symptom-specific physical exam and record a case history related to the chiropractic services provided. Like other health professionals, chiropractors consider many different causes for your symptoms. You may be asked to perform physical tests and movements to help identify the problem.

In certain situations, X-rays may be taken to help clarify the history and exam findings and to investigate the presence of underlying bone conditions or other pathology.

A diagnosis is then made, with treatment options outlined. A prognosis may also be given by taking into account your general health, occupation, stress, and activity levels. Your response to treatment will be monitored by your chiropractor, who looks for improvement of your condition over time.

If additional care is needed other than Chiropractic Care, you may be referred to another Kelsey-Seybold provider.

  • Will I need to continue care after my condition improves?

Once the problem has been corrected, you shouldn’t need to continue care. Some individuals choose to continue with Chiropractic Care after they’re feeling better to maintain proper biomechanical function and well-being. Some conditions may be chronic and require continued care to control pain.

  • Why should I choose a Kelsey-Seybold chiropractor?

Our chiropractors devote significant time with their patients to treat complaints and educate them on their condition. Additionally, our specialists perform the services themselves, not an assistant or massage therapist.

  • What chiropractic services do Kelsey-Seybold chiropractors provide?

In-clinic services performed by Kelsey-Seybold chiropractors include:

    • Chiropractic adjustments
    • Acupuncture
    • Exercise/rehabilitation instruction
  • What conditions can be treated with Chiropractic Care?

Our team of chiropractors commonly treat these conditions at our Kelsey-Seybold Clinic locations:

    • Car accident injuries
    • Carpal tunnel
    • Headaches
    • Neck pain
    • Lower back pain
    • Pregnancy back pain
    • Sports injuries
    • Shoulder pain
    • Whiplash
  • What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that’s fixated, "locked up," or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this procedure is to help improve spinal function and nervous system function.

There are many ways to adjust the spine. Usually, the chiropractor's hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow and constant pressure.

  • Will the chiropractor ‘crack’ my back?

A chiropractor doesn't "crack" your back, but rather adjusts it. The popping sound that you may hear with a chiropractic adjustment is noise generated from gasses in the joint’s lubricating fluid.

  • Does Chiropractic Care hurt?

The treatments themselves aren’t usually painful. In fact, most patients look forward to their adjustments because they experience instantaneous relief of pain symptoms. Individuals who present with moderate to severe pain may experience some discomfort, but our chiropractors aim to be safe, gentle, and non-invasive.

  • Will my health insurance cover Chiropractic Care?

It may, but it depends on your insurance plan. Please contact your insurance provider to make sure you’re covered before you make an appointment with one our chiropractors. You can also call our 24/7 Contact Center at 713-442-0000 for assistance.

  • Is it okay to see a chiropractor if I'm pregnant?

Any time is a good time to improve the functioning of your nervous system, even when you’re expecting. Pregnant mothers may find that chiropractic adjustments help improve their discomfort during pregnancy and may even help make delivery easier for themselves and their babies. Kelsey-Seybold chiropractors are trained in the safe treatment of pregnant patients, but you should consult your OB/GYN before starting Chiropractic Care.

  • Is it true that chiropractors don't prescribe medication or perform surgery?

That’s true. Chiropractors don’t prescribe medication or perform surgery in their treatment program. Chiropractic Care is based on the fact that the body has a built-in capacity to restore health from within, so chiropractors base their care on this principle.

  • Why do chiropractors take X-rays?
    • To see the internal structure and alignment of your spine
    • To rule out conditions that would be contraindicated to Chiropractic Care
    • To visualize underlying disease process or deterioration in the spine
