Helping Children with Diabetes Minimize Heart Disease Risk

Q: My 8-year-old grandson was just diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Can this put him at risk for heart disease as he gets older?

“Yes, heart disease is a risk for people with Type I or Type II diabetes,” says Neal Spears, MD, a pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “However, since your grandson was just diagnosed, he has a very good chance of avoiding heart disease later in life. According to a new long-term study just released, the key for people with Type I diabetes is to tightly control their glucose levels. Help your grandson control his glucose level with a good diet, exercise, and the use of medications, such as insulin, if needed. Advanced monitoring devices and automated insulin pumps are making it easier for people with diabetes to tightly manage their glucose levels, substantially reducing their risk of heart disease later in life.”
