Page Content Kelsey-Seybold physicians have been recognized for providing outstanding cardiovascular and stroke care by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) Heart/Stroke Recognition Program. Kelsey-Seybold physicians account for nearly half of all NCQA-recognized heart/stroke physicians in the state of Texas.
Recognition through the Heart/Stroke Recognition program is achieved as the result of a comprehensive, individualized review process that verifies a physician’s adherence to national standards of excellence in caring for patients with cardiovascular disease or who have had a stroke.
“Our patients with cardiovascular disease benefit greatly when their physician offers the expertise to help reduce the risk of a repeat event. This NCQA recognition demonstrates that Kelsey-Seybold Clinic physicians are meeting and exceeding national standards of care for cardiovascular disease and stroke,” said Dr. Spencer Berthelsen, Chairman and Managing Director, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic physicians went through a rigorous assessment that demonstrates performance which meets the program’s key cardiovascular and stroke care measures. These measures include:
- Blood pressure control
- Complete lipid profile
- Cholesterol control
- Use of aspirin or another antithrombotic
- Smoking status and cessation advice or treatment
Heart/Stroke Recognition provides assurance that clinicians are providing high-quality, evidenced-based care for their cardiovascular disease and stroke patients. When patients receive quality care as outlined by these measures, they are less likely to suffer additional complications, such as a second heart attack or stroke.
“Quality patient care translates into lives saved,” said Sidney Smith, Professor of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Past President and Past Chief Science Officer of the American Heart Association. "This is why the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association is supporting a recognition program for clinicians providing quality care. This program closes the gap by putting into practice American Heart Association/American Stroke Association guidelines and statements to fight heart disease and stroke.”
