Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Expands Centers
of Excellence to Spring

New infusion center offers enhanced cancer care,
services and specialists

HOUSTON (March 29, 2007) —Kelsey-Seybold Clinic announced plans today to expand its nationally-recognized cancer treatment program to the Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center. The plans call for construction of a 12,000-square-foot Infusion Center at the Spring location, providing cancer patients on Houston’s north side with the advanced services currently offered by the Cancer Center at Kelsey-Seybold’s Main Campus Clinic near the Texas Medical Center. These services include minimally-invasive breast biopsy technology, as well as genetic testing and infusion therapy services.

"This addition of the Infusion Center at our Spring location extends a Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Center of Excellence beyond the Texas Medical Center," said Spencer Berthelsen, M.D., chairman of the Board of Directors for Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

"The expansion offers added convenience to our patients, while providing the expertise of Texas Medical Center specialists and comprehensive care from a nationally recognized cancer program," added Dr. Berthelsen.

The American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC) recently awarded Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and its Cancer Center a three-year approval with commendation for achievements in cancer treatment, research and supportive care service efforts. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic has the only freestanding CoC-approved cancer program in the nation.

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's team approach offers support, expertise, treatment and coordination of care based on patients' needs. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, Kelsey-Seybold brings together specialists with diverse medical training to facilitate both diagnosis and treatment. Medical services and consultations among surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists are coordinated for the patient’s convenience.

"When you're coping with cancer, you already have so much on your mind. Our goal is to ease our patients' concerns and offer enhanced cancer care in a comfortable environment close to home," said Tejash Patel, M.D., chief of the Hematology and Oncology Department at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. "We're committed to providing quality care for cancer patients and our community." Along with chemotherapy treatment and services, the Infusion Center will offer social work support, where patients can get information about transportation, support groups and medication costs, and educational resources.

Additionally, the Center will offer other patient services including rheumatology and neurology treatments for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Pharmacists, nurse educators and physicians will educate patients about medications and treatments, drug interactions and the treatment process.

The Infusion Center will offer the services of hematology and oncology specialists and appropriate support staff, social work support and patient education. Dr. Guiying "Grace" Hu, Dr. Selvarani Nallusamy, Dr. Tejash Patel and Dr. Priya Ramshesh, are available to provide consultations and follow-up visits to patients in and around the Spring area.

The new facility is slated to open in April 2007 within the existing campus located at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center, off FM 1960 near Kuykendahl. Patients previously treated at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – Main Campus can now receive the same services, closer to home.
