HOUSTON - (Oct. 26, 2004) In less than three weeks, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic physicians donated $7,000 to help child victims of the Sept. 1, 2004 school siege in Beslan, Russia. In addition to the funds raised by Kelsey-Seybold, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System offered to match funds up to $5,000, through the efforts of Jack Lynch, COO and executive vice president, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, and CEO, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. As of today, $12,000 has been raised to send to victims of the Beslan Russia school siege.
After receiving a call for help from their Russian counterparts at the SOS International Clinic in Moscow, Russia, Kelsey-Seybold physicians began campaigning, Sept. 16, for funds to help pay for medical supplies and treatment of child victims who had been transported to children’s hospitals in Moscow.
Russian medical staff of Kelsey-Seybold’s sister clinic in Moscow, the International SOS Clinic, initiated and continue to be personally involved in efforts to aid some of the children most severely injured and burned.
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, through its long affiliation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has a physician in Moscow, Dr. Jose Flores, who heads medical services to NASA employees, contractors and their families. Dr. Flores works closely with the International SOS Clinic – our “Medical Home” in Moscow and its Russian medical staff.
“I greatly appreciate the efforts of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic to raise money for the children of Beslan,” said Dr. Sobolevsky, Kelsey-Seybold Internist who was raised in Russia and schooled in Moscow. “In times when the danger of terrorism is so rampant, I believe it is necessary for all of us to support each other, especially those that are most helpless.”
Kelsey-Seybold Medical Director James Hoyle, M.D., who has worked closely with Dr. Flores and the Kelsey Research Foundation to rally support, added, “Thank you, to all those at Kelsey-Seybold, St. Luke’s and the Kelsey Research Foundation, who generously donated to help the victims. Thank you for all your compassion and support for these children.”
