Kelsey-Seybold Opens State-of-the-Art Medical and Diagnostic Facility to Families in Fort Bend County

HOUSTON (December 5, 2005) – Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Houston’s largest community-based physician group, is scheduled to open its “Medical Office of the Future” in Fort Bend County on December 5, 2005. This state-of-the-art, 75,000 square-foot medical facility combines quality and convenience for the Fort Bend family by offering access to a wide range of primary care and specialty care doctors, as well as an expanded pharmacy with drive-thru services, and enhanced diagnostic services such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT), mammography and X-ray.

“We know that many of our patients are pressed for time,” says Spencer Berthelsen, MD, Chairman of the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Board of Directors.  “Offering the broadest selection of services is key to saving time. Patients can see their doctor, have labwork done, get diagnostic procedures performed, and get prescriptions filled in one convenient location.” Dr. Berthelsen, who started Kelsey-Seybold’s first clinic in Fort Bend more than 25 years ago, still practices medicine in his home neighborhood.

The Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – Fort Bend Medical and Diagnostic Center will be among the first of Kelsey-Seybold’s medical facilities to implement electronic medical records (EMR) technology. Patients will be able to schedule appointments and get lab results online, and check themselves in for appointments at a computer kiosk.  Prescriptions can be automatically sent to the on-site Kelsey-Seybold pharmacy.

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is the sole tenant of the building, which was designed to reflect the open and comfortable atmosphere of its landmark Main Campus near the Texas Medical Center. Hallways run alongside front windows, with waiting areas open to the hallways. Natural light creates a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

The center will employ 180 people, including 37 physicians, helping to create new jobs in the community as it grows. As technology allows more procedures to be performed in an outpatient setting, the community may well need ambulatory surgical and additional diagnostic services nearby. To be prepared, Kelsey-Seybold has purchased three acres next door to the facility, allowing for additional expansion, including a possible minor emergency center and ambulatory surgery center.

The new facility is located at the corner of University Boulevard and Highway 6, less than two miles from U.S. 59 in Sugar Land. On December 5 at 7:00 a.m., local dignitaries including the Honorable David G. Wallace, mayor of the city of Sugar Land will join Dr. Spencer Berthelsen, Chairman of the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Board of Directors, in a ceremony marking the official grand opening of the newest clinic in the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic network.

The center was developed by Transwestern Commercial Services and will serve as the new home for physicians and staff currently located at Kelsey-Seybold’s Quail Valley, Sugar Land and First Colony Clinics.
