Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is celebrating two milestones in 2007: the 95th birthday of Kelsey-Seybold Founder Mavis P. Kelsey, Sr., M.D. and a bold $25 million investment in an electronic medical record system (EMR), called EpicCare, which will eventually replace paper charts at Kelsey-Seybold. EpicCare was developed by Epic Systems, one of the nation’s leading developers of health care management systems. Epic’s technology has also been implemented in several nationally recognized health care leaders such as The Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Permanente. Can computer software really improve health care? Definitely. Researchers with Kaiser Permanente find patients are more satisfied with their care and communicate better with their doctors when computers are available in the examination rooms. The study of over 300 patients and their physicians was published in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Information Association. “Patients were more satisfied with their doctors after computers were installed in exam rooms,” says lead author John Hsu, M.D., of Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research in Oakland, California. “The patients felt their doctor was more familiar with their medical history. Patients also felt more involved in the decisions about their care and had a better understanding of diagnoses and treatments.” “At Kelsey-Seybold, our main goal is to deliver top quality health care to our patients,” noted James C. Hoyle, Jr., medical director, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “The EMR is an amazing tool that will help us take Healthcare to a new and unprecedented level of excellence and service.” Kelsey-Seybold’s Pasadena Clinic was the first location to convert to the EpicCare electronic medical record system on August 27, 2007. Kelsey-Seybold’s Spring Medical and Diagnostic Center followed on October 22, 2007. Kelsey-Seybold’s Houston Center in downtown Houston will begin the conversion on November 27, 2007. In addition to EpicCare, Kelsey-Seybold is converting to Radiant, the Epic radiology module, at all clinic locations in mid-November 2007. Radiant replaces the current IDX radiology system and ensures that Kelsey-Seybold clinicians use a single, fully integrated system to access patient clinical data.
