Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Joins ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program

Will Offer Participating Physicians an Opportunity to Maintain Board Certification Through Participation in System-wide Quality Improvement Activities

Chicago (July 10, 2019) – The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) announced that Kelsey-Seybold Clinic (Kelsey-Seybold) has joined ABMS' Multi-Specialty Portfolio ProgramTM (Portfolio Program). Physicians who are board certified by one or more of the 18 of 24 ABMS Member Boards participating in the Portfolio Program can now earn Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) credit for their involvement in Kelsey-Seybold quality improvement (QI) activities.

As part of the Portfolio Program, Kelsey-Seybold may now offer medical staff members the opportunity to satisfy their continuing certification program needs, while helping to improve patient health and safety throughout the Greater Houston area. The program will involve approximately 400 providers systemwide, treating more than 350,000 patients.

"Kelsey-Seybold Clinic has always focused on quality, patient satisfaction, and value – tenets that have positioned us to effectively and efficiently manage care for patient populations ranging from the very small to very large," said Patrick Carter, MD, MBA, FAAFP, Medical Director for Care Coordination and Quality Improvement, and Chief of Family Medicine. "The ABMS Portfolio Program allows our large group practice to help individual providers acquire MOC credits by engaging in Kelsey-Seybold's own quality improvement initiatives, which are all designed to improve patient care."

Dr. Carter will oversee the implementation and management of the program, which will be integrated into the structure of the Clinic's QI Department. While open to all its physicians, the Kelsey-Seybold program will be targeted to those doctors whose practice area lies within established initiatives. Key improvement activities will focus on increased HPV vaccination, asthma care, and the prevention and treatment of hypertension.

"Kelsey-Seybold has made a serious commitment to improve the quality and value of the health care they deliver to their communities," stated David W. Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, FSACME, Executive Director of the Portfolio Program. "They also have made professional development a priority throughout the organization. Our relationship will enable them to facilitate continuing certification credit for their physicians who engage in activities aimed at improving patient safety and care throughout their service area."

To date, the ABMS Portfolio Program has helped engage physicians in QI and practice improvement initiatives at hospitals and health systems across the country, with many showing improvement in care outcomes. Since its inception, more than 3,100 improvement efforts have been completed by Portfolio Program participants.
