Kelsey-Seybold Cancer Center is First Freestanding Cancer Program To Earn Commended Accreditation from Commission on Cancer

Program recognizes highest quality of cancer care by health care providers

The Kelsey-Seybold Cancer Center is the nation’s first freestanding cancer program to earn the prestigious Accreditation with Commendation, granted by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. It is the only freestanding cancer program in the nation to earn multiple commendations from the Commission.

“This commended accreditation recognizes Kelsey-Seybold's commitment to provide world-class cancer treatment,” said Tejash Patel, M.D., Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “This recognition reflects the excellence of our program and our ability to coordinate care across many medical specialties, providing excellent care and outcomes for patients.”

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and representatives of 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.

The Commission on Cancer’s Accreditation Program sets quality-of-care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation by the Commission is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain accreditation, programs are reviewed every three years.

Receiving care at a Commission-accredited program ensures a patient will have access to critical elements of quality of care:

  • Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-art services and equipment
  • Multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Access to cancer-related information, education and support
  • Cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
  • Quality care provided close to home
