In January of 2005, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic began offering patients the option of getting their lab and radiology results via phone or a secure Internet website. Now patients can access the results for most tests performed at all Kelsey-Seybold clinics around the Houston area.
“After each visit when tests are ordered, patients are given a convenient wallet-sized card with the access information and directions, which includes their personal identification number (PIN),” says Cecilia Fowler, Director, Ambulatory Care Operations. “They have the option of calling into the system or going on-line to obtain results of tests such as cholesterol checks, X-rays, pap exams, mammograms, glucose tests, prostate screenings, ultrasounds, skin tests, and many other lab and radiology tests. This has become a very popular service. Currently, about 25,000 Kelsey-Seybold patients a month access their results via this program.”
In addition to the significant decrease in turnaround time, there are several advantages to this system.
“The system helped decrease phone tag and mail delays. Patients can get their results when it is convenient for them, 24 hours a day, seven days a week!" says Fowler. "Also, patients who get their results online can copy the results in a personal folder and keep their personal health information in one convenient place.”
Many times the values of the tests will be given. For example, if you have had a cholesterol check, the results will include the levels of HDL, LDL, and triglycerides.
