First Year Curriculum

  • Emergency Medicine (1 month) - Ben Taub General Hospital

Emergency Medicine- Rotation occurs at Ben Taub General Hospital. The experience includes; anesthetic - Digital Block, chest tube placement, diagnostic peritoneal lavage, femoral line placement, incision & drainage – abscess, incision and drainage - Perirectal, ingrown toenail removal, laceration repair, simple and complex, multiple trauma management, subclavian line placement.

  • In-patient Medicine (3 months) - St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital              
  • MICU (1 month) - VA Hospital
  • General Surgery (1 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital

General Surgery- takes place at the Kelsey-Seybold Ambulatory Surgery Center and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital under the supervision of Kelsey-Seybold surgery faculty.   Residents participate as a member of the surgical inpatient team in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative management of patients.  On average, the resident is responsible for 9 patients per day, and has the opportunity to assist on up to 60 cases during this month.  In addition, residents spend 1 – 2 half-days per week in the surgeon’s office and breast diagnostic clinic and perform 10 – 15 minor procedures in these settings.

  • General Surgery (1 month) - VA Hospital
  • Pediatric Wards (1 month) - Texas Children’s Hospital

Pediatric Wards- The content of the pediatrics ward experience includes common hospital-based pediatric conditions, such as asthma, pneumonia, sepsis, acute life-threatening events (near-SIDS), diarrhea and dehydration, and seizure work-ups.

  • Neonatology (1 month) - Ben Taub General Hospital

Neonatology- Residents participate in the care of ill term and pre-term newborns, typically managing maternal-related illnesses (Group B strep, syphilis, drug use, HIV infection), neonatal sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, and respiratory distress.  A full-time Kelsey-Seybold Clinic neonatologist at Texas Women’s Hospital supervises the rotation.

  • Ambulatory Pediatrics (1 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

Ambulatory Pediatrics- includes both well- and ill-child care, with an emphasis on preventative health screening, parental counseling on nutrition, and anticipatory guidance.  Board-certified pediatricians on the clinical faculty supervise residents.

  • OB (1 ½ months) - Ben Taub General Hospital

OBl- the FM intern is the only first-year resident on the team for the rotation he/she is on. First-year resident performed a large number of deliveries, as well as first-assisted at Cesarean sections.

  • Family Medicine Outpatient (1/2 month) – Kelsey-Seybold Clinic
  • Family Medicine Continuity Clinic (1/2 day per week) – Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

Second Year Curriculum

  • Pediatric Urgent Care (1 month) - Texas Children’s Hospital

Urgent/Emergency Care- based in the Texas Children’s Hospital Emergency Center and is supervised by pediatric emergency/critical care specialists.  Here, the resident gains experience in the rapid assessment of acutely ill children, including trauma.

  • Orthopedics (1 month) – VA Hospital

Orthopedics- Residents work with orthopedic surgeons in the diagnosis, and management of sprains, fractures and dislocations.

  • Dermatology (1/2 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

Dermatology- Residents are exposed to both common and uncommon dermatological conditions of an infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, or allergic etiology.  They participate in procedural techniques of punch biopsy, cryosurgery, KOH preparation, etc. 

  • Night Float (2 1/2 month periods) – Ben Taub Hospital
  • In-patient Medicine (2 Months) - St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital              
  • Women’s Health/Gynecology (1 ½ months) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Antoine Clinic, Ben Taub General Hospital
  • Obstetrics (1 ½ months) - Antoine Clinic, Ben Taub General Hospital
  • Psychiatry (1/2 month) - Harris County Hospital District Clinics, Ben Taub General Hospital          
  • Geriatrics (1 month) - Quentin Mease Hospital
  • Urology/Gastroenterology (1 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic
  • Elective (1 Month)
  • Family Medicine Continuity Clinic (3 - 1/2 days per week) Kelsey-Seybold Clinic
  • Longitudinal Rotations/Experiences – Community Medicine, Geriatric Nursing Home Care, Procedure Workshops, Ambulatory Family Medicine Pediatric Clinic, Family Planning/Gynecology Procedure Clinic, Family Medicine Procedure Clinic

Third Year Curriculum

  • Sports Medicine (1 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

Sports Medicine – Residents experiences include the evaluation, management, prevention, and rehabilitation of a broad spectrum of sports- and recreation-related injuries. Residents receive didactic instruction in pre-participation exams, exercise prescriptions, sports nutrition, and sports-related head injuries. Procedures learned: joint aspiration, joint injections, casting/splinting and trigger point injection.

  • Radiology (1 month) - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

Radiology- This rotation provides exposure to a broad spectrum of radiological procedures and an extensive teaching file of radiological studies. The Kelsey-Seybold Main Campus also has full outpatient imaging capabilities including plain films, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy. Radiological studies done in the family medicine center are reviewed with faculty at the time they are performed. At the Kelsey-Seybold Main Campus, all radiological images are digitalized and stored in the radiology computer system, allowing residents to obtain “real-time” consultations with staff radiologists on studies of interest.
