Use the Traffic Light to Eat Right  

Green, yellow, and red lights help drivers know if they should go, slow down, or stop. You can use these same colors to help you eat in a healthy way.

By playing the traffic-light game, you'll learn that there's no such thing as a "bad" food. But you do need to watch how much and how often you eat certain foods.

How to Play
Just give every food you're thinking of eating either a green, yellow, or red light. Here's what each light stands for:

Green light: Go ahead and eat this food. Fruits and vegetables are green-light foods. These are very good for you and are very low in fat and calories.

Yellow light: Slow down before eating this. These foods are good for you. Examples include bread, cheese, and meat. You need some of these every day to stay healthy and to help your body grow. But don't go overboard. These foods are higher in fat or calories than green-light foods.

Red light: Stop and think before eating this food. Foods that are high in sugar or fat get the red light. Examples include sweets and junk food. You should try not to eat too many red-light foods. If you do, you could gain excess weight. Or you could lose your appetite for other foods that your body needs to stay healthy.
