Kelsey-Seybold Physicians Share Their Reasons for Becoming Doctors and their Philosophy of Care

Stanton P. Fischer, MD
Pulmonary Medicine – SLMT
Former Chairman, Board of Directors
Former Medical Director for Specialty Care

“My father was a general surgeon/family practitioner in a small town in Southern Illinois, where I grew up in the 1930s. He chose to practice there because it was the poorest part of Illinois and needed a physician. I spent many hours riding with him in the car, making house calls. I saw how he cared for the people he looked after, how he cared for his family, and how he cared for the community. At an early age, I had decided to be a doctor like he was. To practice medicine is a great privilege. Multispecialty group practice appeals to me as an excellent way to serve our patients’ medical needs. I have spent over half my life at Kelsey-Seybold. I joined the clinic because I liked the vision that Mavis Kelsey and Bill Seybold shared. In medicine, it is important to be a part of an organization that puts patients first. In a few words, putting patients first is my practice philosophy. KSC puts patients first. We try to see that the patient sees the right doctor at the right time. When faced with a problem, we do not make excuses. We seek solutions. We do today’s work today. We work together, as providers, support staff and administrators, and we are part of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System. For me, this has been the best way to practice medicine. And it has been a great pleasure for me to have my youngest daughter, Marie Mack, join the clinic in the practice of Dermatology. Marie has always exceeded my expectations and she is one of my greatest assets.”

Marie Mack, MD
Dermatology – Willowbrook
Daughter of Dr. Stanton P. Fischer – the only father/daughter team to practice at the clinic.

“My father and grandfather, both physicians, had a great influence on the family, so medicine was always a topic of conversation. I can remember the fun of playing with my grandfather’s medical equipment and spending time at my father’s office in the original Kelsey-Seybold Clinic building. I especially enjoyed being pushed around in wheelchairs and riding the elevators with my four sisters when Dad had work to do on the weekend! My grandfather’s stories of caring for patients during his general practice days in southern Illinois revealed the true nature of being a physician before modern diagnostic tools, using one’s senses and knowledge to put the symptoms together to make the diagnosis. I had thought about medicine as a career growing up, but was not sure I could meet the challenge and the commitment of the nature of medical practice. As I neared completion of a bioengineering degree, I felt that I might not have as much contact with people as I would like in my career and approached my parents with the thought of pursuing medicine after all. They were as always supportive. In the end, I chose medicine because I enjoy people. I like the challenges of making a diagnosis, and it’s always great to help others feel better. Seeing how my grandfather and father have led full lives because of medicine only supported my decision to follow in their footsteps. I can think of no better role models or physicians!”

Kathy Sander, MD
OB/GYN – Women’s Center

“I love my job! My background is Biochemistry; however, after a few years in a laboratory, I decided that the only part of the work I enjoyed was lecturing at conferences and teaching folks about my research. HSV, a common viral sexually transmitted disease, was my thesis topic. My interest in educating people about their reproductive health is what led me to my medical degree – and specifically to Obstetrics and Gynecology. My philosophy of care has been consistent from the first day I started clinical practice. I love helping my female patients help themselves. I enjoy counseling patients with the most up-to-date scientific evidence. I pride myself as a physician who avoids paternalistic practice and instead takes the role of the “educated big sister.” With ample discussion about the diagnosis and possible treatments, my patients and I make the best decisions together.”

Debra Luben, MD
Pediatrics – Main Campus

“I became a doctor because I have always been fascinated with the human body and how it worked. I am very much a people person and found that being a doctor combined the science with the personal element. Interacting with my pediatric patients and their families is very rewarding, and I consider it a privilege to be able to be a part of their lives. My philosophy of care is to take care of the “whole patient” meaning getting involved with the physical, emotional, developmental and social needs of the patient as well as the family and environment in which they live. Being a pediatrician, I find addressing all of these issues helps me give the patient the best care I can.”

Tony Lin, MD
Internal Medicine – SLMT
Associate Medical Director
Hospital Services

“I became a doctor because I wanted to help others. I underwent surgery during college, and that experience impacted me. I also saw medicine as a challenge during college when I was studying engineering. I believe it takes teamwork for patients to get well. The team is the patient/family and the doctor/staff. Patients need to understand their medical condition, make decisions and take responsibility to get well. The physician and staff are there to help, comfort and provide information to help the patients make the right decisions.”

Guiying Hu, MD
Hematology/Oncology - Main Campus

“As a child, I saw my mother frequently ill. One year when I was in high school, she had a prolonged hospital stay for heart disease and almost died. From that point on, I knew that I wanted to be a doctor. I think, as a physician, we should do everything in our power to help patients. We should feel their pain, anxiety, frustration…we should always update our knowledge to better serve our patients.”
