Welcome To Kelsey-Seybold Clinic

As famous for the NASA luminaries they treated as they were for practicing preventive medicine, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic had its beginning over 50 years ago when Drs. Mavis P. Kelsey, William D. Seybold and William V. Leary decided to leave the Mayo Clinic and build their own group practice. A fifth-generation Texan, Dr. Mavis Kelsey arrived first, opening an office near the fledgling Texas Medical Center. On January 15, 1949, he saw his first patient. Within two years, Dr. Seybold and Dr. Leary formed the Kelsey, Seybold and Leary partnership, which lasted in various forms for more than 30 years.

Today, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic combines the experience and expertise of more than 300 physicians providing primary care and specialty care at more than 18 clinic locations throughout Houston. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic cares for over 300,000 patients, including members of managed care plans, employer groups and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

In addition to physician services, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic offers a vast array of imaging and diagnostic services, including mammography, MRI, CT scans, our Breast Diagnostic Center and our Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS), which provides instantaneous transmission of medical images to physicians throughout our network of clinic locations. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Main Campus houses a fully accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center serving more than 12,000 patients a year.

In 2002, St. Luke's Episcopal Health System finalized the purchase of Kelsey-Seybold's management company. This new relationship allows a healthcare system recognized worldwide for excellence, to provide administrative services to Houston's largest and most renowned community-based physician group.  The physicians still remain employees or contractors of Kelsey-Seybold Medical Group, which allows them to retain all medical decision-making authority for their patients.

We have provided the following helpful information about our clinic and its services.

Physicians & Providers

Quality Doctors

At Kelsey-Seybold, our patients have access to more than 300 doctors practicing in 40 medical specialties and sub-specialties. All of our doctors have completed a medical degree at an accredited university and are licensed by the Texas Board of Medical Examiners. Most are also board certified. Many serve as faculty members at Baylor College of Medicine or the University of Texas at Houston School of Medicine.

Choosing a Primary Care Physician

Our patients are encouraged to choose a primary care physician for their medical needs. Over time, a supportive patient-physician relationship can develop, allowing doctors to track medical history and detect health problems earlier. At Kelsey-Seybold, the primary care physician is a partner with the patient in addressing their medical needs.

Open Access to Specialty Care

Kelsey-Seybold is a leader in multispecialty, outpatient care. This means that in addition to your primary care physician, you and your family have access to our entire team of specialists. Depending on your health plan, Kelsey-Seybold offers open access to more than 39 medical specialties and subspecialties. This means you can schedule an appointment with any Kelsey-Seybold specialist without a referral from your primary care physician.

Your Team of Physicians and Providers

In addition to our primary care and specialty care physicians, Kelsey-Seybold provides a team of experienced providers, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners that provide our patients with many services. Advanced Practice or Nurse Practitioners (NP's) are registered nurses (RN's) who have earned master's degrees or have advanced education, training and skills in a health care specialty. Physician Assistants (PA's) are trained at accredited medical schools and have completed clinical rotations in several health care areas. Both NP's and PA's perform medical interviews and physical exams to identify, evaluate and treat problems. They advise patients on health risk behaviors and facilitate access to appropriate medical resources. At Kelsey-Seybold, the patient, the physician, the nurse practitioner and the physician assistant collaborate as a team in meeting a patient's medical needs.

All adult women are encouraged to have a well woman exam every year with their personal care physician or gynecologist. After age 40, the well woman exam usually includes a physical exam and a mammogram. On-site mammograms are available at some Kelsey Seybold Clinic locations, and at affiliated institutions throughout Houston. Our team of regional obstetrical specialists coordinate the care of our pregnant patients, providing prenatal care, childbirth classes, patient education, high risk monitoring, and access to Women's Hospital of Texas as well as other outlying hospitals.
